I am honored to serve as Chair of the Committee on Commerce, Small Business and Entrepreneurship. This committee has broadened its scope to include small businesses, which are the economic backbone of our state. As Chair, I explore a variety of ways we can expand entrepreneurship as a vital economic development strategy in North Carolina (H1270), as well as pushing for legislation that will ensure job training, recruitment and retention.

During the 2007-08 session, I sponsored legislation that impacts not only our community, but throughout all of North Carolina. This includes funds to facilitate the North Carolina Military Business Center (H1515) which will strategically position North Carolina businesses to win major service contracts and subcontracts in future military construction at North Carolina bases, and H834, which appropriate funds to support the Defense and Security Technology Accelerator, located in Fayetteville.

I sponsored H1813, a bill which will allow the state to acquire locks and dams on the Cape Fear River from the United States, and protect these future water supply intakes in our region.

 I also fought for access to information for adult adoptees (H445), and supported Safe Havens (H1368), a program which provides families with safe, neutral, and family‑friendly environments for the exchange and visitation with children by parents—without fear of domestic violence.

These are some of issues I am working hard on to ensure that life in our community flourishes to the best of our ability.  I welcome your thoughts about what is most important for North Carolina.
